11/9/17 School Work

This morning Heidi went, in person, to meet with Rebecca's science teacher. We have been having trouble understanding one another about the level of difficulty involved in Rebecca's science fair project. The teacher seems to think that it is fairly simple and reasonable. Rebecca's project asks the simple, sounding, question of do people really stop the required 3 seconds at stop signs. I can tell you after 16 days of observing morning and afternoon for 10 minutes each and helping record the activity at the four way stop by the bus stop that they, generally,do not. Rebecca started early in order to get ahead in the game and has gathered multiple pages of data daily. This week the teacher asked the students to write all the data in their notebook. Since Rebecca is already going to have to rewrite it anyway into Excel for her analysis we felt this sounded silly and unnecessary. After several back and forth emails and a little crying Heidi decided to go in person. Once Heidi explained and showed the data the teacher backed down and will not grade Rebecca down for all of her hard work. Feeling grateful, and a little flabbergasted. Is it supposed to be this hard?
The picture above is David's Latin vocabulary assignment. We have had a significant jump in the amount of daily homework between this year and last. It makes me tired just thinking about it.

  1. From the point of view of a teacher for 35 years I found that students who had parents who actively supported their children in their school work not only learned more but felt loved
