7/11/17 National Zoo and Fort McHenry

The only place to see pandas in the United States is at the Smithsonian National Zoo.

The kids loved the statues sprinkled throughout the zoo.

Peter especially loved shaking the bamboo plants along the path.

The kids appreciated the mist sprayers that helped them cool off on the hot and humid day.

Heidi and Grammie packed us cheese, meat and crackers of assorted types for lunch.

Forty five feet in the air a mama orangutan takes her baby for a walk. Scary, impressive, but scary. The baby is on her back. She appears to also be carrying a blanket.

The kids were fascinated by the reptile exhibit.

A few animals just Lion around (rim shot).

See see a lot of grey squirrels. This is the first black squirrel I can remember seeing.

Today is 7/11 so we stopped by and picked up some free Slurpees.

Next up was Fort McHenry. This is the place where Francis Scott Key witnessed the battle that inspired the Star Spangled Banner. It felt historic just being here.

David, Rebecca and Sarah got to help raise the flag. By Presidential decree a flag must fly at Fort McHenry 24/7 365 days a year.

Heidi and I got to help retrieve the 15 star and stripe flag (similar to the one flown during the 1814 battle).

David used his scouting skills to help fold the large flag.

"Yes Rico, kaboom". This is where the gun powder was stored.

Staring contest

It was great to be at such a historic place and to be able to help out here. Thanks to Grammie and Grandpa to taking us here and letting us in on this special place.

  1. What a day! Filled with memories of a zoo with a special panda exhibit and "animals lion around". Then Fort McHenry--touching the flag‼️ Plus a fun Penquin reference 😂

  2. What I remember most about that zoo is that is all up a hill. We ended up parking at the bottom and trudging to the top, seeing the pandas and rolling back to the car at the end of the exhausting day.
