7/20/17 David Birthday, Kirtland Temple, NK Whitney Store

This morning we awoke in a KOA that reminded us a lot of the Sacred Grove.

David used his scouting skills and hung a clothes line so that we could dry out our "Maid of the Mists" ponchos.

To celebrate David's 13th birthday we ate cereal for breakfast.

Then we crossed into Ohio.

Here are Heidi and Peter at the Kirtland Temple.

The site is owned and managed by the Community of Christ church. There is a $5 per person over 6 charge for the tour so be aware when you plan your trip. Our guide was very kind. The stairs to the second floor are crazy steep. No ADA compliance in those days. They still hold meetings on the ground floor. No pictures allowed inside so we didn't take any. Joseph is getting a little stir crazy from having to sit still all the time.

Next we went to a church history site run by our church.

A friendly sister missionary told us all about the Newel K Whitney Store. Joseph Smith held the School of the Prophets upstairs.

Heidi took pictures inside. Peter was done being still quickly so he and I visited outside.

We've been hitting KOA's across America. So far we've had a very good experience. Clean and safe feeling. They are way cheaper than a hotel and most have activities and games for the kids.

Here is our birthday boy. We are proud of how big a helper he has become. He seems to learn new skills every day.

As part of our celebration we roasted Smores over the campfire. The wet wood resisted lighting at first but with an Eagle and almost Eagle on the case it couldn't hold out long.

  1. Days and miles and significant sites roll on for these travelers. But the biggest event on this day is David's 13th birthday! Happy bday David. We are are proud of what you do and who you are.

  2. On the Big trip our family took a summer long ago, Jon got to be the big helper. Let David know how lucky he is to not need to climb on the roof of the van to load the roof-top carrier with all the camping gear every morning. That trip too was filled with KOA campgrounds, cheap motels (only 2 nights) and nights with friends and family. One great and reasonable way to take such a trip. Peter is about Ganon's age from that trip long ago, feel grateful you don't have a 6-month old (Megan's age that trip). Ganon knows how much of that trip he doesn't remember. These photos will help Peter know he was on this trip but he like Ganon did will hope for another trip when he is older. Hopefully, before he is a father, but I'm sure this gang is ready to be home and spend lots of time in the pool.
