7/13/17 George Washington, WWII, Library of Congress and the Beach

Late into the night and early this morning Heidi and Grammie Mangum have been researching the Connelly line. The goal is to figure out a missing link between two James lines in the family tree. More on this down below.

A heat advisory was in affect today and we felt it early as we trekked towards the George Washington Monument.

Heidi had the idea to stretch out and show how enormous it truly is.

A sign said that they hope to have it repaired by 2019 so that people can return to the top. For now we enjoyed the view from the bottom.

Next up was the WWII Memorial.

There is 1 star for every 100 Americans who gave their lives defending freedom.

Next we worked out way to the Vietnam Memorial. Above is a statue celebrating the contribution women make serving in the military.

Joseph decided it was hot enough that he wanted a hat.

At this point the kids were feeling cooked and were ready to go home. Instead we dropped of Heidi and the 2nd of 3 buildings that are part of the Library of Congress to look for a special book.

She found it! You'll have to hear Heidi tell this story but it is pretty epic. No getting chased by international bad guys but she did have to get past a few grumpy bureaucrats.

This evening Grandpa Mangum took us over one of the largest steel bridges over water in the world.

At 4.3 miles this is one long bridge. You feel sort like I imagine it would feel driving across the tops of miles of sky scrapers. We were up there.

Sarah has been longing to get back to the beach to swim since Sunday so we made our way back to the beach park.

Unfortunately on this side their were no swimming signs. The kids were very brave and made due wading and building a  sand castle.

  1. The Spirit of Elijah is strong with those Mangum ladies‼️The spirit of Elijah, as referenced in the book of Malachi, is described by Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as a “distinctive influence of the Holy Ghost (that) draws people to identify, document, and cherish their ancestors and family members – both past and present” (David A. 2. I'd like to know more about "the book". What were you looking for and can you explain "what you found". I tried to read the photo but you lost me.

  3. The book is called "Lund Washington's History of his Family." It is a manuscript written about relatives of George Washington. One of his relative's relatives married a John James in the 1700s. Mom wanted me to confirm some dates and try to find a missing generation. It was a difficult task to find the book, let alone clear information on the James line. It was a great adventure though.
